Dr Grace Chiu



Grace's research focuses on integrative, holistic statistical methodologies that tackle multi-faceted environmental and biological problems. Graduate students and interns under her supervision from the past and present have conducted statistical research with an environmental focus.

In 2009, Grace moved from Canada to join the CSIRO Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics division (which later became the CSIRO Computational Informatics division, followed by the CSIRO Digital Productivity flagship). While still at CSIRO, Grace became Visiting Fellow at the ANU Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics (RSFAS), where she commenced as Senior Lecturer in July 2015.

Prior to joining CSIRO, Grace was Assistant Professor (tenure-track) at the University of Waterloo, Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science in Canada, with which she is currently Adjunct Associate Professor. In 2003-05, she was Postdoctoral Fellow at the Northwest Research Center for Statistics and the Environment at the University of Washington in USA; she is Affiliate Associate Professor at the Statistics Department there.

Grace has held numerous Canadian government and CSIRO funded research grants. She received the 2012 American Statistical Association - Section on Statistics and the Environment Young Investigator Award, and won the Pierre Robillard Award for best Canadian statistics Ph.D. thesis from 2002. In 2011, Grace was Selected Participant of the Australian Academy of Science Theo Murphy High Flyers Think Tank in Brisbane. She became an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute in 2011.

Grace is a Membership Committee member for the The International Environmetrics Society (environmetrics.org), for which she was Webmaster from Sep 2006 to Sep 2013. She has been an Associate Editor of the society's journal, Environmetrics (wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/env), since 2009.
