ANU designers and resesearchers, Mitchell Whitelaw and Geoff Hinchcliffe have designed this fantastic coaster, a tangible visualisation of how Canberra's temperature exceeded long-term average maximum temperatures for most of 2017.
The inner circle shows long-term daily average maximum temperatures for Canberra, with the spiky line showing 2017 daily maximum averages. The outer circle shows long-term monthly average maximum temperatures for Canberra with the outer rim showing 2017 monthly maximum temperatures - these were above the long-term average for every month except April. All data was sourced from the Bureau of Metereology with the long term averages based on the years 1961-1990.
The ANU Climate Change Institute gave out 70 coasters to random participants at the ANU Climate Update. If you'd like one sitting on your desk or coffee table, you can order them on a one-off basis via https://www.ponoko.com/design-your-own/products/cci-climate-coaster-cbr-... . You'll need to download the coaster file from Ponoko, set up an account and then upload the file to your account. A single coaster costs US$25.97 (including shipping from NZ).
